Most of our favorite celebrities put on a persona when they do interviews or go out in public, so it’s hard to know what they’re really like when no one is watching.
Since we look up to our favorite actors and musicians in Hollywood, it’s easier to believe that they are all good people who treat their fans with respect, though this unfortunately isn’t always the case.
Luckily, most of the A-listers in Hollywood really are as nice as we imagine them to be...

To my surprise, my celebrity didn't make the list. I once met Moe Howard, of Three Stooges fame. We had a nice little chat. And he didn't even slap me or try to poke my eyes!

Don Rickles....Speaking personally, he was more like my grandfather than a hard nosed comedian. A real Sweetheart.
I had a supervisor who met pete Rose as a kid. He said Rose was extremely nice to him.
We were on vacation at Lee’s Ferry near Lake Powell,Arizona. They were filming Mackenna’s Gold. My dad gave me a pen and piece of paper and I went up and asked Gregory Peck for his autograph. He picked me up and sat me on his lap and asked how I was enjoying my vacation.
When I was a kid, my father was fishing buddies with John Glenn, (Virgil) Gus Grissom and Alan Shepard. I was the kid they used to take fishing with them in Hampton Roads every weekend in the summers.
That neat.
Sat next to Sam Neil and James Woods on different flights in the 90’s/ 00’s. Both very nice people, and interesting conversation. Dan Fogelberg was a regular customer for years.
Working in the airports for decades, and doing VIP arrival greets as a manager at the hubs, I have met a lot of celebrities. Some are really nice, some are idiots, and some are just too busy to care. Just like everyone else.
I bumped into Dolly Parton once when I was walking on 3rd Street . . . she was on 9th Street at the time.
I was at LAX airport with a struggling, tired toddler after a transatlantic flight, trying to wrestle my carryons and get a big suitcase off the carousel. A man stepped up and took my bag off and helped me get to where I needed to go. It was the guy who had played John Boy on the Waltons. He was just helpful and selfless and saved my butt that day. Then disappeared with his wife into the crowds.
My friend met Lady Gaga in a parking lot, and they walked together for a bit and she was apparently very “normal” and conversational.
One day, about a year after his father had passed, I invited Donnie and his mother to the house for bar-b-que. About an hour before he arrived, he called and asked if a friend could join us. Of course I said yes and that friend turned out to be Jonathon.
We had ribs and beer and Jonathon told story after story. He was great, a real gentlemen and of course very funny.
About a year latter, Donnie told me he was at Jonathon's house in Montecito, and Jonathon mentioned he had to go to a party with his wife. Jonathon then said:
"I hate these high falutin' parties up her. I had more fun eating hot dogs in your friends back yard then I have ever had at one of these shindigs."
I was in a film with Kevin Costner. During a break in the filming he went across the street and the barricades and offered to sign autographs for several of the spectators, and gave one of the girls a hug.
I always considered him a class act, that just proved it to me.
I once spent some time behind stage with Mitzi Gaynor and her husband. Once she realized I had no idea who she was, they were wonderfully nice. We talked about some of her movies and it was interesting.
I also spent some time back stage with Mike Huckabee at his Fox show. He was very nice to my wife and me.
Story from a former neighbor of ours. He traveled a lot, and was sitting in a bar somewhere, and Jack Nicholson was at the other end of the bar. Neighbor told the barkeep he wanted to buy Jack a drink...so, the barkeep went to Jack with the news. Jack, said, “No” or maybe “No, Thanks.” So, our neighbor told him, “Well, then, buy ME a drink”...and Jack did, and they sat and chatted for awhile.
My Sister flew from London to New York in coach. Sitting next to her was John Kenneth Galbraithe. Since he was an economist I guess he flew the most economical way.
She said he held her baby and played with her for most of the flight. I do know that William F. Buckley liked Galbraithe despite disagreeing with him.
I once had a beer with Buddy Hackett at Snowmass ski resort in Aspen. He was sitting by himself at the bar and I walked up and asked if I could join him. He was a great guy, exactly the same as he appeared on screen.
Met Dale Earnhardt at Richmond raceway one year, made small talk and mentioned that we share a first name. A year later, walking thru the pits, saw him about 20 feet away, made eye contact as I walked by (he was surrounded by fans/reporters) and he waved and said ‘good to see you this year, Dale’..I was floored.
My most recent encounter with the famous was at the Ballet a few weeks ago. Alice Cooper and his wife were just behind my wife and I. During intermission, I complemented his fine interviews given at the time of Glenn Campbell’s passing. He and his wife shared how both families are close.
His wife was in formal ballet when they first married as I recall, so she is a real fan of the art form. They are both conservative and Christian as I recall, but it was not the place for political comments.
I met Fred Willard at the Burbank Airport a couple years back. While the name is unfamiliar to most, you might know the face, as he is an actor/comedian best known for the old Martin Mull comedy “Fernwood Tonight.” In person he has the same head-in-the-clouds persona as on the screen. Very nice and funny man.

Met Phil by chance at the Lehigh Valley mall in 1981, as he was just walking around shopping with his wife. I heard his distinct voice and called out his name. He shook my hand and offered me encouragement. A real nice guy.
Met Larry Holmes at a Boys Club event when I was a teenager. Larry was really cool to all the kids.
Met Rosalynn Carter in 1980 when she was campaigning for her husbands presidential reelection. She had the most wonderful Southern voice and charm. I did not vote for Jimmy but always considered his wife to be a classy lady.
