Felicity Huffman, Lori Loughlin among actresses, CEOs charged in alleged college admissions scam

Actresses and chief executives are among 50 people arrested in a nationwide college admissions cheating scam, authorities announced Tuesday.

According to charging documents, actresses Felicity Huffman and Lori Loughlin are among those involved facing charges.

The suspects allegedly paid bribes of up to $6 million to get their kids into elite colleges, including Yale, Stanford, Georgetown and USC.

In most cases, the students did not know their admission was contingent on a bribe.

University athletic coaches and administrators of college entrance exams were also among those arrested.

The alleged scam centered around a man in California who ran a business helping students get into the college of their choice.

Authorities say parents would pay him a predetermined amount, with full knowledge of what they were doing. He would then steer the money to one of two places: either an SAT or ACT administrator, or a college athletic coach.

The coaches would allegedly arrange a fake profile that listed the prospective student as an athlete, and exam administrators would either hire proctors to take the test or correct the answers of a student.

The bribes ranged from a few thousand dollars to up to 6 million, according to officials. The charging documents, unsealed in Boston federal court, are more than 200 pages long.

They allege that Huffman and her husband "made a purported charitable contribution of $15,000...to participate in the college entrance exam cheating scheme on behalf of her eldest daughter. Huffman later made arrangements to pursue the scheme a second time, for her younger daughter, before deciding not to do so."

Federal agents say they have recorded telephone calls with Huffman and a cooperating witness.

The documents say the Loughlin and her husband "agreed to pay bribes totaling $500,000 in exchange for having their two daughters designated as recruits to the USC crew team -- despite the fact that they did not participate in crew -- thereby facilitating their admission to USC."

Official say they have emails from Loughlin.

If you had a student that spent years rowing crew and then missed out on college admittance due to this scam, I’d sue everyone possible. Crew is a very difficult sport and expensive.

With a son going through the college admissions b.s. right now, this scam really angers me!

A mechanical genius, who likely has more smarts than all the privileged brats combined, he has to jump through hoops to be accepted at the colleges/universities of his choice.

I hope there's some serious jail time and fines for these bastards!

A father I know told his three daughters he would not be paying for their college tuition. He would help but they had to find their way if they chose that route. All three now are successful and working in their field of interest..they did not go to college. They did however choose high school work study programs which gave them a head start in one year programs that followed after high school...and they continue to update their skills by attending work shops in their field.

“Not for nothing but you could have said no. I’m sure UMass has a similar program for a lot less.”

We live in CA. The only reason she went to Boston was to go to BU. She was also accepted to USC and UC Irvine here. She wanted a school that had a “name” in training people for the Opera. She is very talented, but ended up not wanting the kind of lifestyle that would have been required to make a successful career. Mostly because it would have involved living in Europe.

I would figure that the child of a Rhodes Scholar and a valedictorian from Wellesley probably has enough smarts to get into college without a bribe. Of course being the child of a president likely does have some perks.

So would I. One of my sons-in-law is a carpenter and he's bailed my ass out many times.

“Lori Loughlin is very popular on the Hallmark Channel, a miss goody two shoes”

Her daughter’s must have had crap grades / SAT’s. She paid 500k to get them into USC?!? Usually money and not so much grades get you into USC.
