Actually, the late John S.McCain fell into the category of a “legacy.” It did not hurt that his grandfather and father were both USNA grads but also Admirals.
The mistake was assuming that the genes would carry on to the McCain who just died. He finished at the end of his class, maybe 5 or 6 from the bottom. He messed up in flying too.
Destroyed 2 airplanes, one of them on a carrier deck that killed shipmates, and a third was shot from under him in Vietnam.
