Jussie Smollett has been hit with an additional 15 counts of filing a false police report by a grand jury and is now facing up to 48 years behind bars.
The Empire actor was initially charged with one Class 4 Felony charge of disorderly conduct last month but a grand jury has applied that charge 15 times over in an 36-page indictment that was returned on Thursday.
Now, he is facing a maximum sentence of 48 years behind bars and fines of up to $400,000.
He is expected to cut a plea deal with authorities, according to experts cited by ABC.
Counts one to seven apply to the comments he made to police officer Muhammed Baig, who first responded to his apartment when his friend called 911 on January 29.
The second set applies to Detective Kim Murray who interviewed him later that day.
She is who Smollett told, according to the indictment, that one of his attackers was a 'white male'.(snip)
The actor's lawyers say he has been the victim of police and prosecutorial misconduct.
They say his presumption of innocence was 'trampled' and that the entire investigation into the attack has been flawed.

They’ll fine him $20,000 and give him ‘community service’... Chicago’s a democrat city and Jussie Smollett is a democrat.
Any sentence stronger than that would discourage fake hate crimes - and where would that leave the corrupt Southern Poverty Law Center and the thuggy part of the FBI that bases ALL ‘morality’ on believing it’s 1964FOREVER and the KKK is running the South?
No way he’ll be convicted on all, or most of those charges.
OTOH, I doubt he’ll walk or onl6 get probation.
They’ve thrown the book at him— a good sign they want omething to stick & he’ll see jail time.
What ticks me off is the fake spin on his motive. No way he did this—or the threatening letter, for which he hasn’t been charged yet— to get a pay raise.
The powers that be are deflecting away from, and protecting, Kamala Harris.
It’s a good thing that he’s gay, he’s going to need those skills in the big house.
Indeed Chappelle didn’t. I’d be interested in the top Black comedian’s takes on the Smollett and R Kelly interview’s of late. Like from Chris Rock for example, who came out to be on SNL with Chappelle after the 2016 election.
Normally I would expect a white racist be punished more than a black racist. However, in this case, Smollett badly embarrassed the city so we might see some equivalence.
If he does not get three years, we have a clear case of bias to cite. So we have that going for us.
