This was going on at Marvel way before Disney took over. The minor character Northstar, first published in 1979, was always intended by his creator to be a homosexual, and they first thought it “safe” for him to admit his sexuality openly in 1992.

DC Comics' first homosexual superhero was Extraño (Spanish for strange or queer) in the late 1980s.
