OoPs! Stop the presses!

Dad issues a correction!

Says it wasn't a Pauling Physics Textbook,

It was this one:

General Chemistry (Dover Books on Chemistry) (Kindle Edition)by Linus Pauling

From Dad:
"That was the Pauling High School Chemistry textbook,
but I don't see the quote I remember".
"Also the cover is different than I remember."
"note the copyrights, 1947, 1950, and 1970."
"What they are selling is a reprinted in 1988 version."

Dad's class was likely using the 1947 Original,
or the 1950 version.

And Pauling's cover quote in the subsequent editions
Appears to have been removed.

“Last Winter Dr. Einstein was an interested listener
while Dr. Pauling discussed his chemical bond research.
After the lecture, reporters noted that the German sage
asked Dr. Pauling a number of questions.
‘I’m afraid I’m not up on the chemical bond,’
Dr. Einstein was heard to say.
‘I shall have to brush up on the subject before taking
more of your time.’

Those Kids THOSE Days!

About that bit from an unknown 1931 Newspaper clipping:

I've blown it up on a 4K monitor to attempt to reproduce
the text in a more readable form:

The Man Who Stumped Einstein

In Portland, Oregon, the neighbors were
wont to predict a startling future for young
Linus Pauling. After their nerves had been shat-
tered at frequent intervals by the rather devas-
tating results of some of his experiments, the
predictions became more or less forboding,

Had the neighbors taken counsel with the street car
conductor as he was sitting on the curb regain-
ing his breath after a prolonged and wholly un-
successful chase of the 9-year-old lad who
sprinkled the car tracks with a queer substance
that exploded with a deafening report, the
unanimous opinion as to what end the lad would
come would probably have been something less
than Flattering.

FRIGHTENED THE CONDUCTOR

His early experiments were on the car tracks of his
native city, but now, at the age of thirty, he has pub-
lished fifty researches in pure science and won the Lang-
muir Prize as an outstanding chemist.

...ment of the award calls him a "prodigy of...

And Dad also corrects His last two words in
his previous comment:

“The Linus Pauling quotation was the tagline in my 1951 high school
junior year chemistry class textbook authored by Linus Pauling,
when they still taught real knowledge rather than
political correctness, entitlement, and self esteem.”

Thanks Again, Dad!
