“The male-only registration requirement of the Military Selective Service Act, 50 U.S.C. § 3802(a), violates the Due Process Clause of the Fifth Amendment to the United States Constitution,” says Miller’s “final judgment.”

During World War II over 16 million Americans served in the United States Military. 90% of them never heard a shot fired in anger. They were in support positions that got the guns and the bullets, bread butter etc. to the front line soldiers.

During the Clinton Administration the size of the active duty US Military was cut by more than 50 percent to less than 10 active combat divisions. The support positions were eliminated and were to be contracted out during times of conflict. When that time came during the first Gulf war, the left went ape about contract fraud and blamed Republicans for companies like Haliburton, etc. on the News every night.

The entire infrastructure to provide combat support and the training of military personnel for those support roles disappeared. Even Airplane maintenance is contracted out and supervised by Military Personnel. Significant numbers of people received their civilian, non-college, trade and craft skills training from the military. That supply of a trained, disciplined and matured labor force is for the most part gone now.

I believe there should be two branches of the military.
One branch entirely voluntary and for the combat MOS’s (jobs); the other branches should be combat support related.

The draft, if it becomes necessary and regardless of gender, should apply to the combat support branches. An individual who is drafted should be given a choice to switch to combat arms if they so choose. Obviously an individual could voluntarily join the Military for non combat MOS’s.

In real emergencies it may become necessary to force individuals who are capable into the combat arms but only when absolutely necessary.

A draft based combat support branch should come back with heavy emphasis on dual use job skills and training in the event of an emergency. The draftee should have a four or five year obligation similar to the time required for a college degree with tuition support upon honorable discharge. The attendance of college and college level courses could occur concurrently with exceptional service and for those who are capable. Remedial classes should exist for those who were passed along in the public schools.

Too many kids are going to college on federal loans who have no business being there. I believe this was done on purpose, by Democrats, to undermine the US - both militarily and economically in the job market with generations of uneducated, ineducable and unemployable yout’s.

Less than one half of one percent of American Citizens have had any affiliation with the US Military for decades.

The benefits from a sense of National Unity that occurs from young people, from all over the country meeting other young adults from all over the country cannot be underestimated.
