In Don Newcombe, Baseball Got Its First Black Ace
Just four years after Major League Baseball’s integration, Newcombe won 20 games for the Dodgers. That was the start of an extraordinary club.
Newcombe won 19 and 20 games in '50 and '51, then MISSED the '52 and '53 seasons as a result of his time in the Army. He rejoined the Dodgers in 1954 and helped the team win the World Series in 1955.
