How a one million strong tribe keep their dead relatives at home

The Toraja people of Indonesia often don't bury their deceased loved ones for years - or even decades

In a mountainous area of Indonesia, the Toraja people mummify the bodies of the deceased and care for their preserved bodies as though they are still living.

There are around one million Torajan people, most of whom live in the South Sulawesi region, who believe that after death the soul remains in the house so the dead are treated to food, clothing, water, cigarettes.

The stench is strong, so the family will store lots of dried plants beside the body to mask the odour.

I bet there is a hell of a market for fly strips and swatters over there. Maybe even the zapper models.

You know, just hang out with dead Uncle Joe and zapp flys.

Geez, that’s gruesome.

Clara, if you don’t clean your room right now, you’ll end up like your sister.

That photo made me uncomfortable.

The photographer is NOT a neutral observer.

The photographer/reporter is NOT a neutral observer.

He attempting to create a narrative that can be sold, whatever it may take.

And that is why ‘news’ has always been slanted, but long ago you selected your ‘news’ source with an understanding of the views of the publisher.

Today, all ‘news’ is produced by TOTALY NEUTRAL scribes and publishers, hell, even the Pressmen are neutral.

I suspect that a Turing test would typically show bias.

Thank you for the additional information.

When I saw the article, my first thought was the Mexican “Day of the Dead”.

A time of remembrance.

In some locations, they maintain the bones?

It is their tradition, and I would NOT call them “bitter clingers”!
Simply not enough housing in the USA for this to work here.

Terima kasih. In my younger years we would ‘sit up’ with the dead for a while prior to a funeral. Shemira is still practiced by some. But this is on a different level. Thanks for info. I don’t recall coming across the Toraja in my travels.

Very different minds/mental attitude.

In our own culture it is we the living that would say: No, I don’t want my body to be kept around that way. I, the I that is I will then no longer be with that body.

They do indeed. Further, you might be surprised to learn that many of them are huge fans of your President Trump, and are gobsmacked at the way he is treated by the media and his own party.

“Civilized” is truly a subjective term. People demonstrating love for their relatives is OK by me.

I have a box with my dog’s ashes in a bag in the other room. I keep forgetting to bury him. Too frozen now.

How many people have a husband or wife sitting on the mantel in a jar?

I stopped judging cultural norms a long time ago. I am not going to have my relatives set up at a poker table in my basement, but if that is their “thing”, good for them.
