Sometimes it seems from reading posts on here that the average Freeper thinks that guns are pretty much banned in the UK. They aren't, though.
Handguns are banned (unfortunately), but otherwise we have a reasonable choice of legal weaponry, including Accuracy International sniper rifles if you have £23K to spare. Semi-automatic rifles are limited to .22 rimfire, but bolt-action rifles are not.

Comments welcome - not trying to start any fights, just interested in opinions. Personally I own a Mossberg 500 and am looking for a semi-auto shotgun for clay breaking as my arthritis is getting increasingly irritating! :-)

No, you may not chase down and shoot anyone in any state in the US. that is not considered self defense.
You have to be credibly concerned for your life or the lives of innocent others to shoot someone; if someone is running away he is clearly not a present threat.
I am encouraged to see that even in this extreme fun control country some arms are allowed. Hope things loosen up for you.

According to the UK police website below, even pepper spray is illegal in the UK. The only fully legal defense product is a “rape alarm”. Pull the pin as you’re being stabbed, and the device will emit a loud noise.

In New Hampshire the right to carry a handgun either openly or concealed is not contingent on any government action. You can just go ahead and do it. (Assuming you are not a convicted felon, or a person otherwise not allowed to possess a firearm due to age, or other factors.)
There are some federal laws that apply to particular places however, such as Post Offices, schools, and airports.
There are also some regulations related to hunting, so if you are wandering around in the woods during hunting season with a gun and a dead dear on your ATV then you need to have a hunting license.
I'm actually not spouting nonsense or angling for a fight. It's for information and discussion. I'm interested in giving information about what IS available (as some seem to think we can't even own semi-auto shotguns) and in a discussion. I knew that some folk would shoot me down in flames, but that's ok.

All 50 states are required to allow concealed carry, more states are becoming Constitutional carry with out a permit open or concealed. I have taken to carrying my full sized Glock 40 s&w daily openly. I keep my CCW permit merely for reciprocity sake with states I travel to.
(kinda hard to carry concealed...)

There’s a reason Beretta has been in business since 1526. The overwhelming number of semi-autos used in clay shooting here are one of the Beretta models.
I remember when British citizens could own handguns, registered of course. Then came the Dunblane murders and an excuse to confiscate the registered guns.
A-s-s-ault rifles, common in England, and registered, were banned, confiscated, and tube fed shotguns and .22 rifles had their magazines crimped so no more than just a few rounds could be loaded. One gunsmith lamented as he crimped a shotgun as this was not why he became a gunsmith, to destroy perfectly good firearms.
Going back farther, the government was so worried about “REDS” that they fabricated a reason, “CRIME!” in 1919, to start registering guns.
After Dunkirk, so few firearms were in Britain that they asked Americans to “Send a Gun To Defend A British Home!” No doubt if the Nazis had invaded, the British citizenry would have met them on the beaches armed with those great old military weapons of the commoners. the Hay Rake, scythe, and Pitch fork.

Is it a requirement that any gun stored in a person's house be locked up in a safe (or gun cabinet) in the furthest reaches of the house where the gun would be completely useless in an emergency? Some states here in the US (where insane liberals rule) have similar nutty laws or are trying to adopt them.

Shotguns are limited to 2+1 on a Section 2 licence, 7+1 or more on a Section 1. Not sure about rifle magazines, but I think 10 is pretty common.
