Is that the ball-turret gunner?

There's a poem called "The Death of the Ball Turret Gunner". I wrote a paper on it (Honors English, soph, 90's) and the proff only gave me a B cos I missed the whole meaning of it. No one has ever explained it to me. Do you know it?
