Every policeman in the city if the country knows full well this is a bogus deal; but they will gather all the evidence, make a watertight case, then confront the perp privately Columbo-like, quietly; and when he finally caves and confesses, they will allow him to claim "mental distress" or "exhaustion" or some such and let him go into "treatment" somewhere out of the public eye.

Later without any publicity or fanfare (the media will obligingly avert their gaze) he will emerge cleansed and "unwilling to reopen old wounds." Life will them go on.

If they charge him he will become a leftist martyr and if he is found not guilty (very probable) the progressive fascists will claim that shows he was totally vindicated. Better for the police to ultimately announce thdy cannot find any independent evidence to support his claim despite a massive investigation.
