Using an open records request during a general inquiry, The Washington Post obtained Elizabeth Warren’s
registration card for the State Bar of Texas, revealing Warren identified as an “American Indian.”

The latter. But, they’ve done a good job of it, I’ll give them that.
Pro Tip: all candidates and potential candidates for elected office in the US and all other nations: check your yearbooks, applications, term papers, dissertations, prom pictures, birthday cards, and old love letters NOW! Call you mom, your grandma, your exes.
Review all before asking for the public’s support!

If the WaPo doesn't want you to be the nominee they will stab in the back at every opportunity. THEY will choose who they want and it aint her.
Your point on the WaPo is correct. I would be asking who led them to the story, or how many years did they sit on the story. I think the effort here is to dissolve Warren’s chances early on, and prevent her from getting any real votes in the first four primary states.
But there is this one curious thing....in college and the first twenty years of her life, she self-identified as Indian. This apparently lifted her up and got her to this present position in life. If she had NEVER pretended to be an Indian...would she be a Senator today? I personally doubt it.
Hint: we should all go and self-identify as American Indian.
It was the Compost that exposed her on this, so you know they were tipped by somebody already in or prepared to enter the RAT presidential race. Any guesses? The Compost got their marching orders from someone to do Fauxahontas like this. They wouldn’t of done it on their own.

They are "inoculating" her against anyone else using it against her.
This would have been a great "October Surprise" if it had come out at the end of the 2020 campaign. But now that it has been reported, it is just old news and no mainstream news outlet will report it again.
If the purpose was to give her an advantage, she’s toast.
If it was just a mistake that wouldn’t have benefited her then it won’t matter.
