Saturdays are fine by me. I don’t know when I will get the book because they are ALL out at the library.
BACKGROUND
Sadaam Hussein claimed that Kuwait was a part of Iraq.
There is a historical basis for his claim.
A Short History of Iraq and Kuwait
"Modern day Kuwait began in the eighteenth century as a small village on the Persian Gulf. "Kuwait," the word for "small human settlement," was so named by Iraqi rulers of that era. Throughout the nineteenth century and up to World War I, Kuwait was a "Qadha," a district within the Basra Province, and it was an integral part of Iraq under the administrative rule of the Ottoman Empire. In July, 1990 at a meeting with U.S. Ambassador to Iraq, April Glaspie, Sadaam let her know of his intent to annex Kuwait. As the victors of World War I, France and Britain dismantled the Ottoman Empire and the Arab nation for their own colonial purposes. The Iraq Petroleum Company was created in 1920 with 95% of the shares going to Britain, France, and the U.S.
In order to weaken Arab nationalism, Britain blocked Iraqi access to the Persian Gulf by severing the territorial entity, "Kuwait" from the rest of Iraq in 1921 and 1922. This new British colony, Kuwait, was given artificial boundaries with no basis in history or geography.
King Faisal I of the new Iraqi state ruled under British military oversight, but his administration never accepted the amputation of the Kuwait district and the denial of Iraqi access to the Persian Gulf. Attempts by Faisal to build a railway to Kuwait and port facilities on the Gulf were vetoed by Britain.
These and other similar British colonial policies made Kuwait a focus of the Arab national movement in Iraq, and a symbol of Iraqi humiliation at the hands of the British."
Gulf War Documents: Meeting between Saddam Hussein and US Ambassador to Iraq April Glaspie
Saddam Hussein If we could keep the whole of the Shatt al Arab our strategic goal in our war with Iran we will make concessions (to the Kuwaitis). But, if we are forced to choose between keeping half of the Shatt and the whole of Iraq (i.e., in Saddam s view, including Kuwait ) then we will give up all of the Shatt to defend our claims on Kuwait to keep the whole of Iraq in the shape we wish it to be. (pause) What is the United States opinion on this?On August 2, 1990, Saddam massed troops to invade and occupy Kuwait.U.S. Ambassador Glaspie We have no opinion on your Arab Arab conflicts, such as your dispute with Kuwait. Secretary (of State James) Baker has directed me to emphasize the instruction, first given to Iraq in the 1960s, that the Kuwait issue is not associated with America. (Saddam smiles)
On August 2, 1990, Iraqi forces invaded Kuwait and quickly gained control of the country. The United States, along with the United Nations, demanded the immediate withdrawal of Iraqi forces.
Attempts by Iraq to negotiate withdrawal were rebuffed by the United States. U.S. military forces in the region had already rehearsed battle plans to repel an Iraqi invasion.
On January 16, 1991, U.S. and other allied forces launched a devastating attack of Iraq and its armed forces in Kuwait.
And here we are 28 years later trying to extact ourselves from a mid-east much less stable than it was in July, 1990 and still almost entirely in conflict.
Thank you so much for that information.
Democrats thrive by creating issues to scare people, divide us and keep us at each other's throats.
When one scam begins to lose effectiveness they come up with a new one.
Lol!! Took me a while. Was wondering if you had a craving. :-)
Good question.
Right now I’m having trouble seeing. So I’d like to wait a week to see if the drops/humidifier/other stuff help.
BUT there are others that took out a library book, so need to return it eventually. And others are waiting for their library books. I’d hate to start without anyone being able to jump in.
I’ll ping the group in a bit and see the library book holders would be able to renew theirs. I’m on the other computer and don’t have the list. *I know it’s short, LOL, but so is my memory!
Heard an interesting take on “witch hunt”. Trump is not the witch HRC is therefore he is saying they are looking toward her when he says “witch hunt”! Hmmm?
Well that birthday video made me cry, how sweet is she and so much joy she brings to her family.
Have a friend who is a nurse and works in operation room.
She tell s me when some have their abortion they would ask her, “What was it, a boy or a girl?”
She would tell them she did not know.
I also made chicken soup and corn bread muffins, took a big pot over to son’s house, all have coughs and sniffles.
Kit Kat?
Suppose the president declares a state of emergency and ramps up securing the border. What happens to the budget? Is congress then free to pass a budget with everything and the kitchen sink, including daca and whatever amnesty they choose, minus wall funding? Does the president veto and shutdown is reinstated with no end in sight, even though the wall is no longer an issue? Or does he sign and we wind up with lost ground on those issues?
Can anyone walk me through it? Thanks.
According to the law found yesterday he does not need congressional approval to order the military to BUILD THE WALL. It has been reported for some time that there is more than enough money (trillions) in various slush funds for him to pay for materials and land.
How the bill to fund the government works out is anyone’s guess. I suspect there will be money for other than the wall border security programs. Which DJT has also wanted but Rats hadn’t agreed to. POTUS will manipulate till we the people win.
Thanks, I haven’t started reading yet, so just give us notice. Thank you for starting this.
And they are great at language manipulation. Whenever someone tells me they are pro-choice, I say, “ oh, you mean pro-abortion”, that angers them.
“She tell s me when some have their abortion they would ask her, What was it, a boy or a girl?”
Sad. That tells me if they weren’t told that it was all OK and it wasn’t so easy to get, many probably wouldn’t do it.
