Interesting thought, ez. That could be a possible scenario.

You seem to be assuming that it would be the dems fending off the POTUS pick. If I understand things correctly, the House doesn’t have anything to do with the POTUS appointments/nominations. That happens in the Senate and why the Senate was the most important midterm election target.

I believe McConnell would allow a nomination in 2020 if he can find a Senate Rule to justify it. He found one to justify putting it off, and I forget what that was - I have a dim memory of something that Obama had set in motion that allowed him to take that stance.

However I also know I can be wrong! LOL! Maybe one of you who knows more about how the Senate works can set me straight if I don’t have this right.

There is no rule. The case that was made is that you shouldn’t confirm a justice in the last year of a lame duck presidency. Trump won’t be in that situation for another 5 years, if at all. In any event, since there is no rule, McConnell can (and likely will given the chance) push the confirmation process through if it presents itself.
