January 15, SATURDAY. Went with Ellie last night to Dodworth’s rooms and heard Mrs. Kemble read The Tempest. She is fat, but not comely. Very admirable performance. Vocal resources wonderful. She has half a dozen voices in her; drew a separate stop for each character; produced a deep, sullen, brute roar and snarl for Caliban that seemed an impossibility from any feminine windpipe. Prospero’s tone was grand, and nothing could be more tender and gentle than her Miranda. Her tipsy Stefano was transcendent; equal to Burton in The Toodles, and all her comedy was rendered with a spirit of fun I did not in the least expect. No stage performance could be more satisfactory or bring out the beauties of the play (poem rather) more vividly. And what a glorious poem it is!

Five cents for Dickens’ new tale “A Christmas Carol”. A laborer at that time would earn roughly $6 a week for sixty house a week. That book would cost the laborer 30 minutes of wages. Considering just a few decades ago a book would cost the equivalent of two weeks of labor that is a remarkable improvement in affordability thanks to machinery replacing the old style wine press printing process.

The USS Brooklyn was one of the ships involved in trying to resupply Fort Sumter and she would see action in some of the biggest naval battles of the Civil War including the capture of New Orleans and Battle of Mobile Bay.
