(20 Jan 1989) Ronald Reagan flashed one last salute to George Bush and left the nation’s capital to begin the life of an ex-president in California. Reagan, walking hand-in-hand with his wife Nancy, bid the new president and first lady Barbara Bush farewell with handshakes and kisses on the east side of the Capitol at the conclusion of his successor’s inaugural ceremonies. The ex-president turned to salute Bush as Mrs. Reagan waved from the door of the aircraft. The new president returned the gesture.
