So what if this happens: Trump goes to the podium tonight, and says, "Good evening. I have come to talk about a serious matter." (And the Dems are all fired up to rebuke his statement on the wall, mean Orange Man, etc.)
"I have in my hand Justice Ginsburg's resignation. I have accepted it, and here is my nomination for her seat." And then he announces it.
That would take the border off the news cycle, if that's what he wants, and he could use military funding, personnel, etc., while they are focused on stopping his nomination.
Trump’s behavior leading into the shutdown was clearly about goading the Dems into it. He knows he can win and he knows how. There’s no need to change the subject.
My guess (and wish): Clear documentation on how the board is being used to traffic and abuse children in massive numbers, the money that’s driving it, and the connection to Democrats who are blocking the money. A clear and devastating presentation that creates an outcry would leave Democrats with no leg to stand on.
Also, this Thursday is the 10th day of darkness since the shutdown if we only count business days.
