A Frenchman has set off to cross the Atlantic Ocean in a barrel-shaped orange capsule, using ocean currents alone to propel him.
Jean-Jacques Savin, 71, left El Hierro in Spain's Canary Islands and hopes to reach the Caribbean in as little as three months.
His reinforced capsule contains a sleeping bunk, kitchen and storage.
He will drop markers along the way to help oceanographers study Atlantic currents.
Updates on the journey are being posted on a Facebook page and the latest message said the barrel was "behaving well".
In a telephone interview with AFP news agency, he said: "The weather is great. I've got a swell of one metre (3ft) and I'm moving at 2-3km/h... I've got favourable winds forecast until Sunday."

NIAGARA FALLS!
Slowly I turned....step...by...step...inch...by....inch......
Thanks Theoria. GGG sidebar.
I don’t believe Orcas even range as far south as he plans to be. Although yeah, if he gets caught up in the Gulf Stream and heads to Norway....
He’s drifting. No way he can be propelling that thing with sails, oars, or even a motor.
Instead fish in a barrel, we have a frog in the barrel.
This is cool! thanks!
Bookmarked it to follow along. Did anyone else notice the beta “altitude” tracking data? I find it interesting that sea level is not actually level. :)
Cool! I’m not the only one keeping track of him! He has been wandering all around that one area for a few weeks now, but it looks like he may have finally caught a current or some fair wind to push him steady west. :)
He has got to be sharing messages with his followers but maybe you have to register and sign in to read them? I didn’t want to register and find out he’s not communicating with his public following. lol
Thanks for the update!
This reminds me of Puskin’s fairy tale of Tsar Saltan.
The “vessel” looks like a cut cucumber.
Bon voyage, Jacque.
Bon chance.

Thank you! I was just checking that day before yesterday and he is now about 3/4 the way from his origin! When I checked he was heading right at Puerto Rico. Now it looks like he is veering north west a bit.
Thank you again! and please keep me updated! I think what this gentleman is doing is great!
He passed away in 2022, trying to row across the Atlantic.
A 75-year-old French adventurer has died attempting solo row across the Atlantic ocean
Wait to see the look on his face when someone tells he could cover the same distance in 7 hours in an airplane .
“What??!!why didn’t anyone tell me??!!”
Thank you for bringing it up again for the update. Yes I saw that when it happened. All I could think was I would rather go that way than laying in assisted living on hospice ten years later. I was actually thinking about his efforts a couple days ago. I was looking at currents in the Pacific. There is a current that flows like a highway directly from Indonesia straight to the coast of Peru and I was wondering why no one has tried to float that one yet. :)
