My foreign born daughter, for whom we jumped through hoops to bring here legally, was with me in the grocery store one day, shortly after she started working and seeing what her paycheck looked like after taxes. The person in front of us had a load of groceries, didn’t speak English, and pulled out an EBT card to pay for her stash. I heard my daughter say under her breath, “you’re welcome.”
