What did Mattis have to do with Hanford site - that all started in 1943 and from what I remember became a dreadful nuclear waste area?

My dad managed a fruit warehouse overlooking Hanford which was shut down by the government after the start of the war.
The first computer room I ever visited in 1965 was Hanford's facility in Richland.
Richland is part of the Tri-Cities; Richland, Pasco & Kennewick.
