10 tanks that changed the history of armored warfare The tank was introduced in World War I when Britain unveiled the then-secret weapon against German forces and were able to run these rolling fortresses right over German barbed wire and trenches, firing cannons and machine guns into German fortifications. Now, armored columns are a commander's fist, punching holes in enemy lines and then rushing through them to annihilate enemy formations.

Part of the problem with German mechanized equipment in general, and tanks in particular was that few German soldiers were not mechanically inclined or trained. Maintenance and repair required specialized troops and repair depots. American farm boys were used doing routine maintenance and making do with minor repairs on tractors and trucks during the depression. They performed routine maintenance in the field and often fixed up their vehicles in the field enough to get them back to a repair depot. Also, when retreating from the allies, the Germans didn’t have time to recover a disabled tank so they destroyed it to prevent it being used by the enemy.

Yeah, never understood why they didn’t train the crews to do field repair.

The T 34 was adapted from a design by American Walter Chrisite. He tried to sell it to the US Army but they weren't interested.

The Stridsvagn 103 didn’t change history, but it has to be one the most brilliantly designed tank for its mission...ever. It was a purely defensive weapon and would have driven the Soviets nuts had there ever been an engagement.

Typical American interwar stolidness: Allow the Russians to use the Christie, but not ourselves.

The Sherman Firefly, with the British 17-Pounder, was formidable.

Regular 76.2s would lure in a Tiger or Panther, and the Firefly would dispatch.

Mike Curb was (is?) a conservative, and one of the youngest record executives ever.
