TREASON

“The history of liberty often shows that a would-be tyrant likes to accuse his opponents of treason. So, to safeguard our liberty the constitution itself sets out the kind of proof we need to find some one guilty of treason.

For this reason America has had relatively few cases of treason. not so in early English and Roman law. “Treasonous acts” covered many things, in fact, anything that seemed to threaten the community safety.

In the fourteenth century the English tried to define treason: Since every subject owed allegiance to the King, trivial breaches of a private nature became “petite (small) treason.” But a subject disloyal enough as to attack or plot against the king himself was guilty of “high” treason.....”

ONE HUNDRED YEARS AGO THIS WEEK!

Theodore Roosevelt prepares to leave office and President-elect William Howard Taft stands ready to move in after his triumph win gives Republicans their fourth straight presidential election victory.

Los Angeles Herald, December 21, 1908

CONTROVERSY WITH SOLONS STIRS GOSSIP
Washingtonians on Qui Vive Over Roosevelt

Congress' Last Session One of Snappy Events

Political Casualties Forecasted—Chief Executive's Attack on Senate May Lead to Much Trouble

With the adjournment of congress until after the holidays Washingtonians are busily gossiping of the series of events which already has characterized the short but snappy sessions of the second half of the sixtieth congress.

Not the least important of these "events" was that portion of the president's message criticizing the higher law makers in connection with civil service details. It was like a bomb hurled into their midst, for it created havoc not only in the Democratic ranks but in the Republican ranks as well.

Many senators declare that in substance and by inference the president has denounced them as so many rascals, and the resolution appointing a special committee to investigate the president's language portends political casualties which old-time prophets hesitate to forecast.

Leading solons say the president has stirred a hornet's nest with which he is not yet through. ...there is a great deal of speculation as to what will ensue from the president's attack on several of the large newspapers of the east, whose enmity he has created because of their demands for an investigation of the Panama canal bonds deal.
