He would have been allowed in a conceivable case, Sacramental confession covers forgiveness of sins and he would have had to have a valid marriage exchange of vows. Not per Roman Catholicism....they would have had to remain abstinent so as not to "commit adultery".
The hyjinks Rome goes to in their dogmas.

Did you forget that in David’s case Bethsheba’s husband was dead?
Matrimony is only for life, not forever. So it is perfectly possible for David to have had a valid exchange in the Catholic Church.
