I try always to be charitable with panhandlers and beggars, so long as they are not aggressive or menacing. I know that some of them, maybe a majority, are not that deeply in need of my five bucks. But I also know that anyone who is willing to go to the street begging, even as a scam, has a deep spiritual wound.

I also know as a Christian, that God loves this guy just as much as He loves me. So who am I to sit in judgment when I can do something for him at so little cost to myself.

That’s a lovely, Christ-like sentiment; but the philosophical question remains, what does he do with the money? (I’m not being sarcastic or mocking -— it’s a sincere question.) If you gave him a sandwich and a bottle of water, or a new pair of socks, would that be more helpful, assuming he really is in need? Whatever the answer, it’s true that many people will come to the Lord, due to the kindness of one who shows Christ’s love to them.
