Yes. Melian is a Lord of the Rings character. Well, more Silmarillion, but same same. She was a Maia married to an Elf King, the mother of Luthien Tinuviel.

Silmarillion has been sitting on my bookshelf for over 10 years: the story of Túrin and Nienor depressed me too much: hence my, umm, issue with the name Melian.
