So why was this number (for the Senate) dropped during Kavanaugh confirmation for the Supreme Court? Will some vote in the Senate throw something to the SC now?

Good question. There is a thought that this difference can overcome Collins/Murkowsky types of opposition votes. Maybe more can get done...depending on McConnell.
We still can’t be absolutely certain that “53-47” is a prognostication of Kavanaugh, Senate seats or maybe something else the Senate may take up in this or the coming session. The only thing I feel certain about is that it is directly related to a US Senate vote (past or future and we know the future proves the past).
Overall, I think it is a way of telling US patriots that the Senate WAS the mid-term target and Advise and Consent for POTUS appointments (Judicial and Cabinet) are comfortably safe for the remainder of his term. Now, he needs to work a little on his “panel of appointment vetters” to make certain they are on board with The Plan.
