In reality we are in a warming period but are still in an ice age and probably going into a mini ice age as in the past. In fact we may be going into a full ice age. Historically the condition of the earth is full ice age.

The warm periods (going back 450,000 years) are at very regular intervals. The warm period we are in now is quite a bit longer than the previous warm periods. If past geologic history means anything (and I think that it does), we are due for a full on, mile thick ice over Chicago style of glaciation.
