My wife, bless her heart, had the habit of slurring the initials together and calling them “heebs” or “heebies”. When we got back to Michigan, everyone around hear looked at her with crazy stink eye.

I finally broke down and told her that heeb was a slur used against Jewish folks. It was really hard to do with a straight face. I’d let her run with it for 5 years down in Texas (where no one really cared).

yeah but... we grew up calling it the heeb. Had one Jewish gal in my high school. She made the most of saying the heeb oughtta be hers.

At any rate you know a lot of us Texans can't get the right groceries we want without the heeb. There's some other chains now that cater to Texas cuisine but until 10 or 15 years ago no other chain worked. Granted, in our hometowns there'd be locally owned stores we could patronize. But when heading to a new town we had to rely on HEB for fixins.
