5ft 2in company boss sues British Airways over back injuries after he was 'wedged in' next [tr]

A company director is taking British Airways to court after claiming he suffered a pelvic injury from being wedged in next to an obese passenger on a 13-hour flight. Stephen Prosser, who is only 5ft 2in, is suing the airline after claiming that he was forced to sit crushed against the side of the plane by a 6ft 5in man weighing 23-stone who was sat in the middle. Mr Prosser, 51, claims BA staff refused to intervene and ask the man to move seats, during the flight from Bangkok to London Heathrow.

This poor guy. One of the few advantages of being height challenged is you does not feel so squeezed in an airplane. 23 stones = 322 lbs. The problem is if BA demanded the obese man buy 2 tickets to account for his girth the fat lobby would scream bloody murder.

Well, the problem people who have minimal thinking capacity and a total rejection of the twin concepts of research and scholarship is that when they post asinine comments defending the ever shrinking seat and restroom sizes is that normal people wh have flown on flights in the past and in the present will point out to them that the seating isn’t large enough for tall people who are in shape with a muscular build either.

If you don’t like this rebuttal of your stupid non-point C19fan, you should have put some thought into the matter before making your condescending post. The seating really is getting awful.

Ask not for whom the bell curves. It curves for thee.

“ended up doing a lot of damage to my back over the course of a nightmare 13-hours”

Yeah, NOPE. I woulda been laying on the floor or something. No way I’d be in that situation for 13 hours.

*See my tagline*

If he were allowed to carry a knife on the plane he could have carved a couple of flank steaks off the steer to get the fat bastard out of his seat.

Southwest Airlines makes you buy a second seat if you’re really huge.I am 5 ft 10, 270 pounds...but have never had to buy a second seat on SW.The seat belt fits me. (Capitol Steps parody of Lyin’ Eyes, about Southwest’s policy:
“You can’t fly with giant thighs...but if you want, we’ll supersize...”)

Have seen some amazingly huge people though. One man I saw in a store was not only about 7 feet tall but had to weigh close to 400 pounds.

The short guy apparently wanted the staff to move the fat guy instead of moving himself.

If there was an open seat and he didn’t move himself to it, but insisted on keeping his seat despite complaining about it, he doesn’t have a leg to stand on, IMHO

I don’t fly anymore. Security lines and having to give up part of my seat to those who don’t fit in their own seat so many times. It’s like having to give up part of your meal to them as well, because they need more. If an airlines ever figure out how to charge by weight and can adjust the seats to fit the size person that paid for the size seat they need, I might fly again.

Doesn’t anybody read the article anymore? It said the flight was full. The ‘elk’ (That’s “moose” to us North Americans) came on as they were closing the door - generally indicative of a standby passenger. The ‘elk’ also complained about being jammed in.

Being 6’5” and 340 pounds myself ( somewhat overweight but not too fat) I can testify that seat pitch is much smaller than it used to be. The airlines like to squeeze ‘em all in to get that load factor up there. And on long flights it ain’t no fun. That’s one of the main reasons I avoid flying whenever there is an alternative.

LOL, being tall is great unless you are on a warship or sailboat...when I was in the Navy, I saw several guys with gashes in their forehead from not getting low enough when they went through a hatch...and on a sailboat trip through the Caribbean, one of my shipmates was 6’6”, and he had a perpetual bandage on his head. Tequila and low overhead don’t mix!

I fly international all the time and I am 5’9” and 285 lbs, but most of the belly is in the front, not wide by side. I don’t encroach on the neighbors although I prefer to raise the armrest. I will say that this hombre must have really stood out in Thailand. Them’s some tiny folks there. I love it there. Surprised no one wanted to rub my belly for luck, but you’d be hard-pressed to find friendlier people on Erf. I just got back from there last month. Good times. Great food.

But back to the main subject, yes airlines are ridiculous. The bigger planes(A380, 777, A350, 787) tend to have a bit more seat pitch, especially if you select the international code-share. For United, choose ANA, Thai, or Lufthansa. British Airways I was on a flight from Stuttgart to London and got a middle seat. Plenty of room for me and the tray table. Of course, BA charges you for EVERYTHING... no free drinks or snacks. Their safety videos are a hoot though. I wish I could fly business class but company mandates cattle class. Moo.

I saw a video of Andre the Giant in an airplane. Dude was so big the had to remove a couple rows of seats so he could fit.

Been in this situation before, but on a bus I wound up sitting in the Bus’ bathroom for 90 minutes.

Happened to me on a 2.5 hour flt. The women was sooo fat I had to sit sideways. She was so embarrassed, kept apologizing to me. She was also to be on my return flt so I stayed an extra day so to avoid it.

If you weigh 300 pounds, you need to buy 2 seats or ride in first class. You aren’t entitled to half of my seat. Or shed 100 pounds.

I am around about that weight, and I fly often. I never touch the person seated next to me.

It is quite possible for a 6’ 5” 325 pound man to sit in an airline seat in coach and not touch, much less cause injury to, any adjacent passenger.

My family and I flew to DC this summer to tour the capital. It was my first time on a plane in years. When we got on the plane and were moving down the aisle, I stated, “Did these seats shrink?”

A few people already seated chuckled, shook their heads, or knodded affirmatively. I’m 5’8” and weigh 135 lbs., and even I felt smushed into the seat. My strapping husband had his knees to his chin. Packing people in like sardines, it seems.

You live your life, I'll live mine.

If I was not able to contain myself in my own seat, I would buy another ticket. But that is not the case, and I am a lot bigger than that.

So the issue is not encroachment on your space.

If your consideration is aesthetic, I can't help you with that.

Thats fine but the seats are too small for people weighing in at far less than three hundred pounds, which was my point.

There have always been a few whales plying the friendly skies, but it didn’t cause injuries because the crowding of the seating hadn’t gotten to the point where even average sized males are schunching up against other passengers.
