this reminds me of Captain Grace Hopper, whom I invited to speak to my languages group in Boston, explaining the archeology of computers and how old ideas need to be remembered because their need will arise again. How desperately I wish I had been videotaping in those days.

Oh my, that was a while back. Rear Admiral Grace Hopper passed on January 1, 1992. I saw a couple of her lectures on film in the middle 1980s. Brilliant lady. And you, as well.

I can still put myself in that narrow room, sitting to the right as she spoke to the group. Wearing her white Naval uniform. Got to pick her up at the airport and she explained exactly who I was to write to to thank them for paying her way and what I was to say in the letters. In my mind, she’s standing there, so small and straight, saluting at the end of the talk. Still hits me so deep.

I still have one of Admiral Hopper's nanoseconds around here somewhere.

She was a force of nature. If there was EVER a flag officer I didn't want to piss off it would have been her.
