Do we really care if public pages (like FR) are encrypted ?

The world has recently become anal about ‘secure pages’.

To me, its about con-ning you into buying newer p.c.s, updating browsers, buying more memory.

Text is text, one byte per character, its not rocket science.

Google is down-listing sites that aren’t secure and coopting the industry into going anal about security protocols, its a plague if you ask me.

That is because Free Republic isn’t using the secure socket layer security protocol. All sits that are http//www as opposed to https//www are considered not secure anymore.

Actually it is. https://www.freerepublic.com/tag/*/index works just fine.

Getting an A grade out of SSL Labs isn’t so easy nowadays. For the websites I manage I have to fiddle with the SSL settings quite a bit (particularly the menu/ordering of the offered ciphersuites) to keep SSL Labs happy each month while also not inadvertently locking out older browers. Jim did a good job.

Use https://www.freerepublic.com. Problem solved.

Your browser will try to alert you when you use a non-secure connection to any web site, and http is by default not secure. Assuming the web site supports https with an up to date certificate, you can use that.

Mine has the “s”,but no lock.

The main pages of FR are secure. When you go to a post the page may not show as secure if people post images. The links to the images may not be secure and I have found many images on FR pages will not load for me due to my browser security settings. My version of Firefox also tells me the page is not secure because there may be images or other non-secure links on the page.

As I type, this reply page shows secure but once I return to the page for this thread it will again tell me it is not.

All these years and I never knew that. I re-logged in with the most secure connection.

What you just did has no correlation with the security of the pages on FR. When you use the most secure login that means when you leave FR then you will have to sign back in when you return. That part is all about the cookie that is set in your browser but has nothing to do with the actual security settings on FR pages.

I had my first virus and I have been on line since forever. Had an electrical storm and lost two Apple Routers even tho the were both plugged into surge protectors. I replaced those with NetGear Skyhawk. I am pretty sure the Router was infected when I installed it..

I installed Norton to clean up the system and that includes Safe Web. I have been warned on 2 or 3 web sites since then but never on FreeRepublic. I always use my own link.

Thanks -—I never even thought to look at security-—even when making a donation-——I haven’t had any problems, though.
