Pentagon research project called "Insect Allies." Funded by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), the project involves using gene-editing techniques like CRISPR to infect insects with modified viruses that could help make America's crops more resilient. If a cornfield were hit by an unexpected drought or suddenly exposed to a pathogen, for example, Insect Allies might deploy an army of aphids carrying a genetically modified virus to slow the corn plant's growth rate.
According to the DARPA website, these "targeted therapies" could take effect in a single growing season, potentially protecting the American crop system from food security threats like disease, flooding, frost and even "threats introduced by state or non-state actors.
Insect Allies, is less concerned. "Anytime you're developing a new and revolutionary technology, there is that potential for [both offensive and defensive] capability," Bextine told The Washington Post. "But that is not what we are doing. We are delivering positive traits to plants We want to make sure we ensure food security, because food security is national security in our eyes."
Insect Allies is still in the early stages of development, and at least four U.S. colleges (Boyce Thompson Institute, Penn State University, The Ohio State University and the University of Texas at Austin)have received funding to carry out research. Bextine told The Washington Post that the project recently achieved its first milestone testing whether an aphid could infect a stalk of corn with a designer virus that caused fluorescence. According to the Washington Post, "the corn glowed."

Pretty markings on that floof.
Good morning. It’s another Monday, I think. I hope the wind doesn’t blow so much today. It’s difficult to sit outside for very long when the wind is so cold. Poor little Bella doesn’t have a coat that fits her, and I thought I’d like to get a skein of yarn and make her a little sweater. Poor little puppy.
I hope Pat enjoys his classes. What degree is he working towards? If any?
That’s pretty coloring. Have you ever seen a real-life cat with that sort of coloration?
While still in high school, Pat is taking a basic selection of gen-ed courses at community college. By the time he finishes high school, he should have 40 hours or so of guaranteed-transferable (in-state) college credit. His long-term plan involves Computer Science.
It’s sort of a light-brown tabby, although you don’t see the stripes from this angle. I’ve seen some like it.
Morning Kitteh warning!
Tomorrow, I will be going to Parris Island for my daughter’s graduation from Marine Corps boot camp. I will not be able to post the Kitteh from Thursday to Sunday. Please help yourselves to the ping list, which is at the top of my profile page.
If I knew how to do that, I would. I envy your trip, for sure. Before I can go anywhere for longer than a couple of hours, I need that portable nebulizer. I’ve really gotten used to the convenience of it and the freedom it gives me.
I don’t know if I can afford to get it in December, but I’ll look at my budget.
Ooooh, exciting! Are you going to post pix? Have a grand time and please offer congrats to Elen for me!
We’ll make pictures available somehow.
You just copy the list from my page and open a post. Then go to “Good Morning Kitten,” copy the address of a picture, and post it using img src=
What does Pat think about the non-math subjects? (What they teach in American History these days should be interesting.)
Psychology classes will ruin her brain.
If you want to hear about what the Psychologists have learned applied from a Christian perspective, look up Clay McLean ministries. Don’t let his east Texas accent fool you. He did one of the best expositions of how Jungian Archetypes represent Principalities and Powers I’ve ever heard.
It’s just a survey of psychology. Tom and Elen both took it without getting any weirder.
He’s taking English and Geology this semester and likes them both.
I saw some interesting architecture yesterday. But I didn't fight the tourists for a camera angle so here's where you can read about it.
And here are a couple of photos from the web.
It won't be too long before all Computer Science is done by computers. In the spirit of "if they replace your job with black boxes, get a job making black boxes" have him focus on AI.
Wow. Words fail me.
Ever since I was a very young child there were people who wished I could, just once, say the same.
I’m with the lion on this one. Kids!
Youngest ArGee changed phones about a week ago. We found out when Mrs. ArGee lost the ability to find where she was (something she offered us). So Mrs. ArGee asked her if she wanted to come get the bicycle we’d been storing in our building when checking on this. The bike room key was dropped off for us yesterday so, issue resolved, right?
Today, Mrs. ArGee discovered the bike is still there, but without the lock. It now has a tag on it with someone else’s apartment, not ours. I have no idea whether she talked to them or not. We don’t know those people.
I’m sure the child went through some kind of sexual harassment if not assault with the NYCB, but if she’s that messed up she needs to seek help.
Been a while, but I got it.
