The Pentagon Wants to Make an Army of Virus-Spreading Insects. Scientists Are Concerned.

Pentagon research project called "Insect Allies." Funded by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), the project involves using gene-editing techniques like CRISPR to infect insects with modified viruses that could help make America's crops more resilient. If a cornfield were hit by an unexpected drought or suddenly exposed to a pathogen, for example, Insect Allies might deploy an army of aphids carrying a genetically modified virus to slow the corn plant's growth rate.

According to the DARPA website, these "targeted therapies" could take effect in a single growing season, potentially protecting the American crop system from food security threats like disease, flooding, frost and even "threats introduced by state or non-state actors.

… Insect Allies, is less concerned. "Anytime you're developing a new and revolutionary technology, there is that potential for [both offensive and defensive] capability," Bextine told The Washington Post. "But that is not what we are doing. We are delivering positive traits to plants… We want to make sure we ensure food security, because food security is national security in our eyes."

Insect Allies is still in the early stages of development, and at least four U.S. colleges (Boyce Thompson Institute, Penn State University, The Ohio State University and the University of Texas at Austin)have received funding to carry out research. Bextine told The Washington Post that the project recently achieved its first milestone — testing whether an aphid could infect a stalk of corn with a designer virus that caused fluorescence. According to the Washington Post, "the corn glowed."

I thought of that too. The wall jack is repairable, and it's a homeowner fix, but most people are too hands off to dare try it.

Most hardware stores, Home Depot, and Lowes have what you need, other than gumption, or duct tape.

By the way, the wires are really tiny. I can use my fingernails as wire-strippers.

Yes. Phone wiring has always been a model of simplicity, even when the phone company moved to those clip-in connectors.

And there’s not enough voltage in there to hurt a fly.

I just talked to TDS and for now, I “have both TV and Internet.”

I’ve decided that I will find a YouTube of how to replace a phone jack and take the one from the bedroom and bring it in here, so at some future point, when I get the wild hair to hook up a fax line, I won’t have to be so frustrated. (Said wild hair usually hits about every 3-4 months.)

Of course, I don’t know how long the TV will be on because service is supposed to be stopped here as of today, and I have to call to cancel the ISP. The Roku is set up in any event.

I’ve done phone jack switches before but it was a very long time ago and I want to make sure I still know how. Therefore, I’ll watch a refresher video and be ready to fix it after a while. Like a month or two.

This one has had the “snap gazinta” removed, somehow, and there is nothing to hold the business end of the phone cord.

Actually, the snap connector is on the phone cord, but I presume you know what you’re looking at. It could be that the phone cord end has been damaged. They even get stepped on!

The advantage is that the most disposable part is the phone cord. Some places have several just sitting in a drawer.

On repairs, if you get down to just wires, they are all color-coded. Just do one wire at a time.

No. I just bought the phone cord, opened the package and went to plug it in and there was nothing but a small square hole. The bedroom jack, however, is intact.

My problem is remembering what I saw from one room to the next! ;o]

But that’s for another day, because my body is telling me it’s been up long enough and had enough stresses, and it wants to go to bed.

So Ta for now!

That's odd. I can't think of what else that could be. If it were rectangulare it could be one of those new outlets that directly plugs in USB devices. But a small square hole without even a notch for the phone cord clip isn't something I've ever seen. If you can't post a picture, you might want to be careful when unscrewing the plate. It might be a phone outlet, but it might not.

"But a small square hole without even a notch for the phone cord clip isn't something I've ever seen."

Sounds like it could be a plate adapted for either phone or internet, but without the connector in place. It could perhaps have been pushed out of position, or perhaps never seated properly.

The thing to do is remove the plate from the wall and see if anything's behind it. If there's a phone connection, it needs to be seated or glued into position so that the phone cord can be inserted from the other side.

One of these days we'll have a small robot that someone can move into and operate by remote control. Then we tinkerers can visit our neighbors and fix things for them.

I'm sure that's coming but first the motivated engineers over at the porn connections have to figure out the right way to create the feedback loops. Once they do that they'll become gazillionaires, but they haven't contacted me about it yet.

Evening TC,

In answer to your question:
If the UK was a psychiatric patient it would be on some very strong medication.
One day I will be able to move to the Republic of Yorkshire and escape the maddening humourless South.

How’s Your world?

Nothing in the hole. It looks like whatever (”phone clip?”) was in the hole was removed, and possibly forcefully. So my plan at the moment is that some day, when I feel like moving the dresser and the night stand (solid wood and very heavy), I’ll watch a video to refresh my memory, then take notes as I remove the jack from the bedroom and put it into the living room.

Da Morning Floof looks about ready to do something nefarious!

Good morning.

I’m not all that great this morning and this “cold” is trying to beat me up. I hope I feel better tomorrow because I don’t want to stay home from church. I’ve already done too much of that.

I have to straighten up the joint, and maybe get some stuff shredded (another thing long overdue) and swap out the linen closet and pantry because I need a bigger pantry. I really hope I can get that done today.

And letters. The letters need to be written!

It looks to me as though Kitteh has caught a bug and doesn’t want you to take it from her.

Good luck with all your efforts! We’re supposed to hike this morning, so I need to get snacks ready.

Afternoon, Moosie!

GB seems very confused lately about who is in charge and who has all the marbles. How’s the Brexit deal going? Did they decide it was a non-event?

Good morning ‘Face.

To be honest ‘Face I’ve not been following the story much lately.
The Entire thing has developed into a farce of epic proportions.
There has to be an announcement before the end of March .
No doubt the Remoaners will get their own way, again.
