It does.

The Socialist Dem use each occasion to stress and weaken the institution. And now we see threats of physical danger for both the nominee and his/her family. And conceivably, such threats continue for the nominee's term on the court.

It would seem important to set a deadline. For example, public comments and pubic witnesses are to be presented within ____ days (perhaps 7-10). That would make the fabrication of seemingly credible - but false - claims a bit more difficult and tend curtail the number of claimants.

The Dems would be comfortable with that; see Janet Reno's 15 minute confirmation which was limited to two questions per R (as I recall).

obviously, Feinstein is primarily to blame for this fiasco
but
the Senate leadership could have told her that her leaking of the letter without being able to vouch for its truth.... was unethical... especially since she did it only after the committee had finished its work on the nominee
