It's lucky for the colonists that they'll have to live deep underground because of the lack of atmosphere, because on the Martian surface, the radiation is also higher than it is here on Earth. Mole people! Thanks ETL.

The Mars TV series had them living underground. But, the pacing of the show was so slow and the characters so uninteresting that even I quit watching.
