It's More Than Faster Phones: The Life-Changing Potential of 5G Technology
RCM ^ | 09/19/2018 | Gary Shapiro

In 1969, it was space travel. Today, the world’s most tech-savvy nations are in a race for 5G – networks that operate 100 times more quickly than today’s cellular networks.

So what’s behind this competition to achieve 5G?

First, buffering and lag will be a thing of the past, reducing the download time of a two-hour movie – which now requires six minutes – to only 3.6 seconds. But the impacts of 5G are more far-reaching than faster download speeds on our mobile devices. 5G allows for the lighting-speed transmission of massive amounts of data, making the potential applications of this technology life-changing.

Imagine the future of health care in a world of seamless connectivity. Doctors can remotely diagnose symptoms in real time – a potentially life-saving development for people who physically can’t get to a doctor’s office. With robotic-assisted laser surgery, doctors can perform complex operations with greater precision on patients on the other side of the world. Medical students can virtually tour the inside of the human body.

5G health care innovations are already making their way into the marketplace, from electronic sensors that monitor your sun exposure to trackers that stick to your clothes and provide up-to-the-minute health assessments.

But this is just the beginning.

“here we are dependent on satellite based internet and a weak signal from the nearest cell tower along an interstate highway. No highway, no cell tower. no cell tower, no cell phone.”

OMG!!! whatever will you do?????

“Imagine the lives saved on a D-Day scale invasion”

So 5G is a “national security” necessity?? B.S.

With the wide availability of Wi-Fi, I very rarely use my phone’s 4G...so why should I care about 5G?

Where did I say that? I was giving an example of how it was more useful than watching movies.

Jeez. You guys are old.

“Imagine the lives saved on a D-Day scale invasion”

That is a direct quote from you, and it claerly implies 5G as a national security interest.

Now that’s a good argument. NOT!!!

It is an idiot that refuses to recognize (think through) the ramifications of what they say, extended to their practical realities. Surely if the military sees/saw 5G has critical to saving a large amount of military lives in a D-Day scenario, they would/will see/make 5G a national security interest; whether YOU acknowledge that or not.

Oh for Christ’s sake. I suggested a benefit of high speed data and you are turning it into a thing.

What the hell is the matter with you?

That effort will not be put in. Rural areas just aren’t worth the money for anybody.

I used to think the same thing. But, actually they are going to have to do this. 5G is essential to implement all of the technology that is emerging in the automotive industry. Collusion avoidance, traffic management, etc, etc will happen and our entire road network will be incorporated into the 5G network, including rural areas. This will not be the current radio technology that is used by cell phones or satellite technology used for internet, it will be millimeter wave technology that will not require dedicated cell towers. It won’t happen overnight, but it will happen.

No they aren’t. There’s just not enough money in it. 5G towers ain’t cheap, and their range is limited. Rural America needs too many towers for too few customers. By the time they’re putting 5G in your part of the world 6G will be getting rolled out in New York.
