The concept was sound. The execution was at fault. The two main portions of the pedestrian bridge was meant to be supported by cables from a central tower. They put up half of it counting on the rigidity of the span to be enough support until the second span and supporting cables could be put in place. They were horribly wrong with deadly consequences.
It looks like the same problem with this Canadian bridge. The central tower and supporting cables are missing there, as well.
The concept was sound.
I don’t agree with that assessment. Safety margins were way to low on that project. Compromises were made for aesthetic considerations.
If properly implemented, that Miami bridge design would have been far more cost-effective and durable than standard designs. Oops...
