I don’t even recall where the 42 comes from. I just have a very faint trace memory of it being postulated or discovered or some such in a similar kind of discussion ... no recall of where or more details. Can you tell me?

As others have pointed out this is from a series of book The Hitchhikers guide to the galaxy. The first book starts out with the revelation that “42” is the ultimate answer to the universe. The quest laid out by the book is to find the ultimate question that is associated with that answer. Mostly silly adventures in a sci fi setting and a great read. When you hear someone call out “42” in response to someone asking a group for an answer your nerd alert should go off. Lol
