Unlike the Constitution, language is organic; it evolves. Try reading Middle English, let alone Anglo Saxon. My usual example is the term 'long lived'. It was intended to be pronounced long lie-fed with lenition of the 'f' to 'v', but it has evolved to the same as 'they lived on 12th Street.'

My current pet peeve is people who pronounce the “t” in “often”. Should be a death penalty offense. I’ll issue pardons to FReeQs I otherwise like.
