“Pillar to the Sky” by William Forstchen is an interesting take on the space elevator idea.
The tether could be attached to the ground and an end station attached on the far end beyond geosynchronous altitude.
Short out the Van-Allen charged particles?
I’ve always liked the idea of building a mountain 100 miles high.
Sprite ligthening.
But where is Mimi Rogers, aka Mrs. Robinson in her skin tight space suit!!!
Thanks! That was helpful. so I have a better understanding now. They want to see if they can move cubesats 30 ft and eventually extend it to 60,000 miles. Sounds like there’s a lot of work to be done.
Not buying it. You know how much a spool of wire 300 miles long would weigh? The force of pull keeping it up on the top end would break it.
I'm sure they've already considered that.
Tesla wanted to supply power to the World by this mechanism?
Its advocates seem to think it is like dangling a plumb bob off an overpass. It isn’t. If the whole structure could be extruded in space (which will be necessary, there’s no way to launch something that large, ironically or otherwise), there’s no way to deploy it. If it could be deployed, it would all wind up in one tangled mess, or tear itself apart. Don’t argue with me, argue with Kepler.

Has anyone tried building a Megasized Wrist Rocket Slingshot ?
We have plenty of commieleftists for Testing and Practice Ammo...
Without actually reading and learning many of the details, I instinctively think it’s a ridiculous idea.
It would drag. If you have a strong enough material, this shouldn’t be a problem. However, we don’t have a strong enough material yet.
He did want to supply free energy to the world, but not through any technology like this.
This is cool and I hope they’re able to make it happen.
One question though, What happens if those cables snap and come tumbling down to earth? That would be one hell of a mess!
