GOVERNOR JOHN HICKENLOOPER
In the previous Q thread, the name of John Hickenlooper, Colorado Governor, came up. While he is not referred to by Q, there were some participants of the thread who requested a dive into his background.
This is my attempt to do a cursory search, and mostly was able to do that, but in a few places, the shovel equipment came out.
Because the data kept piling up, I have broken up my report into 7 Parts.

John Hickenlooper was born in Pennsylvania. His dad died early. He got his degree in geology. He worked for Buckthorn Petroleum until the days when the oil industry went into a coma.
[The joke at that time among some of my oil patch friends was, “Will the last one leaving Houston please turn out the lights? - It was a brutal time in the oil patch! ]
In need of a different source of remuneration, he started the Wynkoop Brewing Company brewpub in 1988. During that time, it is reported that he made efforts to somehow upgrade and redevelop real estate of the poor neighborhood he was in.
The next major accomplishment listed is that he served as Mayor of Denver. He had been elected for a second term, when he won election for Governor and had to resign that office to take the Governorship. The article lists a number of his positions on various issues, but I’ll spare all of us the enumeration of them. The case can be made that it is all the usual liberal claptrap, on such things as gun control, death penalty, etc., as one might expect.
There was some controversy during the 2008 Convention of Greek Columns fame, which Denver hosted for Obama. It seems he:
“arranged for the DNC host committee members, a private non-profit organization, to get untaxed fuel from Denver city-owned pumps, saving them $0.404 per gallon of fuel. Once the arrangement came to light, the host committee agreed to pay taxes on the fuel already consumed, and to pay taxes on all future fuel purchases. Also, Coors brewing company based in Golden, Colorado, used “waste beer” to provide the ethanol to power a fleet of FlexFuel vehicles used during the convention….”
He had wanted the Senate seat vacated by Ken Salazar, but Gov. Parker appointed Hickenlooper’s former chief of staff, Michael Bennet.
The Wiki article also confirmed that on August 25, 2017, it was reported that Republican Governor of Ohio, John Kasich was considering the possibility of a 2020 unity ticket to run against Donald Trump with Kasich at the top, and Hickenlooper as vice president.
Colorado conservatives are very likely relieved that he is term limited as Governor and cannot run in 2018.
Hickenlooper’s first wife was Helen Thorpe, a writer with credits in The New Yorker and many others. In 2010, he told the press that he and Helen attended Quaker meetings and tried to live by Quaker values. They separated after 10 years of marriage.
He married Robin Pringle in 2016.
What is actually interesting about him are a number of his relatives - and the connections which those relatives have had, and the speculation that arises from “what could those connections have meant, if anything, to John Hickenlooper...and his future?”

He was elected Lt Gov under Gov Charles Foster. He wrote a book about the battle of Shiloh.
Based on this information, while I think most of us would consider his grandfather and great grandfathers to have been a patriots, nevertheless, political connections were made, and groundwork was laid for his progeny to pursue political careers if so inclined.

John Hickenlooper had a cousin named George Hickenlooper, who died in 2010, and was an Emmy-winning documentary filmaker.

GEORGE’S LAUREL CANYON CONNECTIONS:
It turns out that Roger Corman has a link to Laurel Canyon. Corman directed “The Trip” in 1967, which was a psychedelic film written by Jack Nicholson at locations around LA, including on top of Kirkwood in Laurel Canyon.

George’s first feature length documentary was “Hearts of Darkness: A Filmmaker’s Apocalypse,” which explored the making of “Apocalypse Now.” He made other films, and wrote the book, “Reel Conversations.”
Another indirect link of George Hickenlooper’s to Laurel Canyon would be through Rodney Bingenheimer. Hickenlooper made a film called “The Mayor of Sunset Strip,” which is about the famous DJ.
The connection to Laurel by Bingenheimer is noted by dailynews.com in an article entitled, “When Laurel Canyon wasn’t just an alternate route to the 405: Larry Wilson”

EARLY DEATH
“Hickenlooper died in his sleep on October 29, 2010. Despite initial reports that Hickenlooper had suffered a heart attack, the coroner ruled that his death was the result of accidental painkiller overdose, combining oxymorphone with alcohol. Sleep apnea and a “moderately enlarged heart” were contributing factors. He is survived by his wife Suzanne, son Charles, a younger brother and his mother and father.” He was 47 years old and in Denver when he died. A Denver doctor performed the autopsy.
So George Hickenlooper had a short life behind a camera, with at least two contacts with people who had ties to Laurel Canyon. He was a documentarian.
His cousin, John, “made a cameo appearance as a fictional senator in George’s 2010 film “Casino Jack.” John was the mayor of Denver at the time.”
Note that George’s father has “Loening” in his name. That may be an interesting factoid in measuring why he chose his particular life’s work when you read of other relatives.

Each of the wiki biographies I have cited above of John Hickenlooper, and the other Hickenloopers all cite Olga as a relative, but fail to explain the exact relationship to any of them. No doubt that info is available but not from the easily available data I was focusing on for this search.

Olga Samaroff, nee Hickenlooper, was actually quite an amazing woman. She was born in San Antonio, Texas. Her parents were Carlos Hickenlooper and Jane Hickenlooper. Her grandmother, Lucie Palmer Loening Grünewald, was an accomplished pianist, and was her first teacher. The grandmother arranged for her to be heard by some of the well known Lights in classical music at the time, who agreed that she should study in Europe, as there was a deep bias at that time against American trained artists…. much less, women artists.
Her grandmother accompanied her to Europe where she received excellent training. While there, her parents had moved to Galveston and were wiped out during the 1900 great Galveston Hurricane.
In 1900, her grandmother was arranging for her Berlin debut, when Olga decided to marry Russian civil engineer Boris Loutzky. Olga was pressured by her husband to stop performing, as well as having the internal bias as well, to be the conventional wife, so she did stop her perfomances. However, that did not seem to be enough for him, because reportedly he was quite jealous. She was able to obtain a papal annulment and legal divorce in 1904, and returned to the US.
She was able to re-launch her career in America by playing in the Steinway Hall, where she was heard by some influential musicians and gliterati, and so she was off and running. Her promoters were not going to accept her unless she changed her name from “Hickenlooper” to something “European.” There was a name in her family tree which was acceptable, so she become “Olga Samaroff.”
She was the first American woman to record her performances.
In 1905, she met a completely unknown organist/musician, English-born Leopold Stokowski. They courted for about 5 years and married. A bit later, he obtained the conducting position at the Philadelphia Orchestra in 1912, which is where he had a career for many years.
Olga, again with her inner drive to play the “wife” role, she subsumed her career, but not totally. She was the first American woman pianist to perform all 32 Beethoven piano sonatas. She worked hard to promote his career. They had a child, Sonya.
They separated in 1923, yet remained friendly. According to the Olga wiki page, she was heart broken at Stokowski’s unfaithfulness:
“…She took refuge in her friends, among whom were George Gershwin, Irving Berlin, Dorothy Parker, and Cary Grant. In 1925, Samaroff fell in her New York apartment and suffered an injury to her shoulder. The injury forced her to retire from performing. So from that point on, she worked primarily as a critic and teacher.…”.
And what a teacher she was! If one is interested in the development of piano curriculum in the US, she is one of the shaping powerhouses. She was on the faculty of the newly established Juilliard Graduate School in New York. She had quite a number of noted students.

Because I was seeking to do only a shallow snorkel dive at this time, since Hickenlooper is not referred to in the Q posts, there are nevertheless elements which caused me to want to go get out the deep dive equipment. I resisted that, and hope that what I have found so far will suffice to give clues as to the importance of the following people, not only to Olga Samaroff, but also quite possibly to John Hickenlooper, who may possibly be a 2020 running mate for John Kasich against Donald J. Trump.
LEOPOLD STOKOWSKI

Leopold Stowkoski - Olga’s 2nd husband. He is world famous as a conductor. One of his very best known works was with Walt Disney on the movie “Fantasia,” wherein he played himself as the conductor. He also conducted the Philadelphia Orchstra, and created the Hollywood Bowl Symphony Orchestra, In 1949. He had other very major accomplishments to his credit, which would be quite long to list.
Of note is that he married twice more after his marriage to Olga [Hickenlooper] Samaroff, who brought him out of obscurity.
His second wife was Johnson & Johnson heiress Evangeline Love Brewster Johnson (1897–1990), an artist and aviator, to whom he was married from 1926 until 1937 (two daughters: Gloria Luba Stokowski and Andrea Sadja Stokowski).
For Q aficionados, it is possible that his third wife’s name will make you sit up very straight, or at the very least, raise the eyebrows:
“…. Stokowski’s third wife (1945–1955) was heiress and actress Gloria Vanderbilt (born 1924), by whom he had two sons, Leopold Stanislaus Stokowski (born 1950) and Christopher Stokowski (born 1952)….” They were married for 10 years.
In part 6, it is told to us in Wiki that Olga was heartbroken after her break up with Stowkowski. The report cited a few people to whom she turned for solace. Among those were Irving Berlin, Cary Grant, and George Gershwin.
IRVING BERLIN

I did a search on Irving Berlin. He was very patriotic, writing patriotic music for both world wars. There is an interesting story related about his WWII work with his musical review, “Irving Berlin: This Is the Army.”
He had contacted General George Marshall and arranged for his backing to create the show as a Broadway revue. The article is quite interesting, but what got my attention was that after the showing on Broadway, it went on tour, then when in California, Warner Brothers bought the option for the movie rights. In all cases, Berlin opted to donate the proceeds to the Army. After the movie was made, the company took the revue on tour to the two theaters of war - Europe and the Pacific.
CARY GRANT
It is possible to go into great detail about Cary Grant’s fascinating life, but most of that can be found on his Wiki page:

The article names numerous people in his Hollywood life. Among them are
Douglas Fairbanks and Mary Pickford, whom one biographer documents as having been on the same ship when Cary Grant was on his way to America.

Some who have done studies of Laurel Canyon are well acquainted with the Laurel Canyon home that Fairbanks and Pickford had there. So right there, Grant has an immediate contact upon arriving in America with that group of people.
While it can certainly be possible, although potentially heartbreaking, to trace Grant’s connections to Laurel Canyon and the Hollywood movers and shakers, such as Alfred Hitchcock, Grace Kelley, Mae West, Frank Sinatra, Audrey Hepburn, Katherine Hepburn, and so many of the movie greats, for this report, we are just brushing very lightly though some of the people with whom we was involved, and apparently, one of them was Olga [Hickenlooper] Samaroff. We have no idea what influences, if any, any of these people may have had on John’s, or even his cousin George’s life. But the connections are there with Olga.
GEORGE GERSHWIN
He had a legendary creative output in his short life. While in New York, he produced a lot of his very well known and popular works. It is not mentioned on his Wiki page, but he was apparently friends with Olga Samaroff there in New York, and during the time she was grieving her loss of Stowkowski. This makes sense because they were both very well known pianists of the time there in New York.
Gershwin moved to California in 1936 and became involved in RKO, Howard Hugh’s movie company. Presumably his friendship with Olga remained, but in the cursory examination I have done, I did not find further data on that. The point is that through Olga, we are seeing that there are several at least indirect Hollywood connections to John Hickenlooper, aside from his cousin, George.
DOROTHY PARKER

The excerpt of interest to us is fairly brief:
“Dorothy Parker (née Rothschild; August 22, 1893 – June 7, 1967) was an American poet, writer, critic, and satirist based in New York; she was best known for her wit, wisecracks, and eye for 20th-century urban foibles.
From a conflicted and unhappy childhood, Parker rose to acclaim, both for her literary works published in such magazines as The New Yorker and as a founding member of the Algonquin Round Table. Following the breakup of the circle, Parker traveled to Hollywood to pursue screenwriting. Her successes there, including two Academy Award nominations, were curtailed when her involvement in left-wing politics resulted in the being placed on the Hollywood blacklist.
Dismissive of her own talents, she deplored her reputation as a “wisecracker.” Nevertheless, both her literary output and reputation for sharp wit have endured….”
There is no doubt much data left to be found regarding the various connections to the Elite Cabal in John Hickenlooper’s life. We even see one Rothschild numbered among intimates in Olga’s life. There is a Vanderbilt in Olga’s former husband, Leo Stokowski’s third wife, Gloria. His current wife is CFR. If John is not a recognized member of the elite, he seems to at least be able to knock on the door, for there are some possible entrees there.
One can say that many of the Hickenlooper family members portrayed here have made admirable contributions - at least it would seem so.
I have found this story to be a fascinating one, and hope that it sheds light upon a powerful family, which is not very well known to so many of us.
