The battle of Gettysburg was the largest engagement of the Civil War, and--with more than 51,000 casualties--also the deadliest. The highest regimental casualty rate at Gettysburg, an estimated 85 percent, was incurred by the 26th North Carolina Infantry. Who were these North Carolinians? Why were they at Gettysburg? How did they come to suffer such a grievous distinction? In Covered with Glory, award-winning historian Rod Gragg reveals the extraordinary story of the 26th North Carolina in fascinating detail.

For all that like to read about the WBTS if youve not read this one on the fabled 26th NC Infantry, especially their service at Gettysburg I highly recommend it.

We lost about as many in three days as we did in ten years in Vietnam. There were many heroes on both sides in that battle, just like Guadalcanal or the Chosin Reservoir.

Gettysburg was bloody, but only about 8,000 to 9,000 killed total. Vietnam combat deaths were 50,000+

A “casualty” during the civil war was usually more serious than later conflicts because modern medicine wasn't there yet. Many of the casualties of that battle lost a leg or an arm which effected their lives and livelihoods greatly.

Battle of Sharpsburg was the worst day in US (sort of) history. 25k dead or wounded. Numbers are tough but it was a brutal day. Damn Yankees. Yeah I went there ;)

Thanks, sounds like a must read
Makes me all the more sad at the destruction of monuments in Durham and Chapel Hill
Proud North Carolinians still honor their Civil War heritage

Vietnam lasted about a decade. Gettysburg lasted 3 days.

Yes. And we wouldn't be The United States Of America. The greatest country in the world. And after the war the Confederacy, which was not a very cohesive entity to begin with would have no doubt fractured further into a Balkanized mish mash of God knows what.

A lot of the deaths in the Civil War (perhaps a majority) were from diseases caught in camps from proximity and poor sanitation.

As you should. People take that topic way to personal. Its our history and both sides have heroes, villain and the truth of it all.
CW battles were extremely bloody over much shorter periods time than modern warfare for US troops. Now WW1 was a meat grinder for Europe.

I’ve read it and enjoyed it. My ancestor was part of Pettigrew’s Brigade with the NC 47th that drove the Yankees off McPherson Ridge. Another good book is “Lee’s Tar Heels: The Pettigrew-Kirkland-MacRae Brigade,” by Earl Hess.
To: philman_36
After over one hundred and fifty years I’d hate to think. And if the South had won the war would it have freed the slaves?
