Chicago Police are under fire after allegedly parking a 'bait truck' full of designer shoes in an impoverished neighborhood, two days in a row.
Activists allege on at least one occasion last week, police parked the partially open truck near a group of children playing basketball in Englewood, southwest Chicago, in an attempt to lure them into committing a crime.
'Instead of stopping crime, they're trying to create it,' Martin Johnson, who spent an hour filming the second truck on Friday, said.
He was joined by another local woman, Helen, who said police were forcing an already at-risk group of people behind bars.
'When you live in the conditions that we live in, communities that are starving, and you're hungry, your conditions and your situations make choices for you,' she said, referencing the policeman who just a day before had claimed those arrested had made a 'conscious choice'.
'Whoever acted and went to jail yesterday, they didn't make a conscious decision, their conditions made a decision for them.' On both occasions, police are seen surrounded by furious residents, with marked and undercover police cars parked nearby.
While locals argue to police the trucks are a 'dirty' tactic, and officers are 'setting up' the community, law enforcement was seen arguing back anyone who engaged with the trucks was making a conscious decision.
Fellow activist Charles McKenzie, who works with anti-violence and crime prevention group God's Gorillas, told Vox he believed tactics like bait trucks would damage trust between the community and its local police force.
McKenzie said the alleged bait truck projected the idea police were focused on hurting members of the community, not protecting them.
'How do we supposed to trust [police] if they setting us up like this?' Mckenzie said. 'How can we trust them?'

“At the same time, I believe it wrong to throw unnecessary temptation in peoples face here”

ROTFLOL!! Zinggggggggggggg!
How? Surely you don't even want to have sex on an unconscious woman or to steal, no matter what, so how are you being victimized?
“Just trying to get the rules straight.”
Stealing from a ‘bait’ truck is most definitely still stealing and a crime. I’m not a Christian but from what I have read I believe Jesus would consider those baiting a crime that didn’t exist intentionally are just as guilty as the thieves.
Consider me devil’s advocate if you want, but just trying to look at this from another perspective.
Oh the horror; oh yeah huge manatee!
It is a bait truck, you know it is a bait truck and you go for the bait anyway. What does that tell us?
They took the bait.
You’d think, but that’s not really what happens.
They let you take off, do a burnout, whatever. Then they hit the lights. These two were plain clothes, the camaro was caged and tinted. But it’s declared official use. Plates are the best tip-off but we’re not always looking there.
I will say, without a doubt and I’ll get the officer’s name too - Westport CT police are the WORST when it came to that trick. On a nice backroad through Easton/Westport/Darien is a road with ample passing room. I passed a Ford Explorer once and he hit the gas to race me. In my Supra I spooled up the turbo and made it past. When I passed him he put his lights on - behind the glass. He didn’t pull me over but I was still pretty miffed that he blocked me from passing in a safe manner.
CT is just full of the prickiest people you’ve ever met. Hands down.
... you are probably not out playing basketball. I've never really seen starving children playing basketball. Whenever I see pictures of starving kids in Africa, come to think of it, they are NEVER playing basketball.
Everyone knew they were past-date and you couldn’t use them in this semester’s classes.
You could leave that truck in my neighborhood all day, and they most that would happen is someone would call to have it towed.
Just because the trap is baited, no one is forcing you to take the bait.
Or work boots!!!
Probably someone else will say this also, but I was always taught not to leave things where they might tempt someone into theft.
Same reason you destroy sacred objects—not to tempt anyone into a sacrilegious act.
Cops were wrong.
I was casually cruising recent posts until I read yours. Beer exiting the nostrils at mach 3 ...hysterical
Also, they were kids and maybe some of them not very smart.
I was put in situations like that at least 5 times that I can think of: my job as cashier when I was 18 (I was bonded, which helped me get another job later), a folder left right next to me when the cops all left the room, postage stamps left out at a campaign desk, an important phone call that came to me “by mistake” with both sides of the conversation audible at the office, someone trying to trick me into taking illegal cash for my political group.
That last one almost got me, because I didn’t know it was illegal. Fortunately, I was mad at the person who wanted o give it to me.
Sometimes paranoia, or just plain common sense and a knowledge of the way the world works can help you, so I guess it did. I didn’t fall for any of those tricks.
Could have left a truck filled with watermelon, would bag just as many
“How do you view drug stings and the like?”
Really have no problem when they are done correctly with probable cause and are targeted. Pedo’s are typically repeat offenders and addicted to their perversion, most drug abusers also are repeat offenders.
Just for a second imagine parking an unlocked truck full of nudie mags in front of an all male prep school for 2 days and arresting anyone who takes the bait. I see the shoe baiting generally along those same lines.
Safari principle here...
When driving through the Safari keep all windows up, doors locked, do not slow down, do not look at the wild animals, and definitely, most definitely do not exit the vehicle, for to do so is to seek death. And, it will be all your fault because the wild animals can not be expected to know any better. Wild animals act like wild animals. This is why it was George Zimmerman’s fault because he exited the car and Travon was acting as he would be expected to act. So, anyone parking such a truck with valuables in it, it’s the drivers fault for the stuff being stolen, and probably burned too.
