A 23-year-old New Zealand woman has died after she and three friends jumped from a bridge in Sicamous, B.C.
RCMP say it happened at around 2 a.m. Wednesday when all four people leaped from the Bruhn Bridge on the Trans Canada Highway.
The bridge is 20 metres above the Sicamous Channel connecting the popular boating areas of Shuswap and Mara lakes, 75 kilometres north of Vernon.
When the woman didn't resurface after the jump her friends found her and pulled her to shore where she was rushed to hospital, but was pronounced dead.
Police say there is nothing criminal about the death.
The B.C. Coroners Service is continuing an investigation and the woman's name will not be released.
The death is the second water-related fatality in Sicamous this summer and the Lifesaving Society of BC and Yukon says 34 drowning deaths had been recorded in B.C. up to August 1.
"While we want to encourage people to get out and enjoy all that the area has to offer, we cannot stress enough the importance of paying attention to advisories and signage which are put in place to ensure your safety," said Siacamous RCMP detachment commander Sgt. Murray McNeil.
Was there a sign saying “Don’t jump off the bridge?” If not, I smell a lawsuit!
He can't stress it enough - that's obvious since stressing it achieved nothing.
The problem for the nanny state red-tape finger-waggers is that they have drowned the world in advisories and signage. Warnings are issued for every little thing, especially glaringly obvious conditions like wet pavement after a rainstorm. They have cried wolf repeatedly and have the brass neck to wonder why their cries are ignored.
To claim that signs 'ensure' safety is to have an irrational belief in their power. But, as this episode demonstrates, irrational people will ignore the magic signs especially when they are running with the crowd.
I am not a liberal.
Bridge? 2AM? I wonder if alcohol might have been involved.
Whats with the British (Canadian, new Zealand etc) seemingly hate of the article THE.
When I get sick I go to THE hospital. Perfectly cromulent English word.
Also need a floating sign in the river, “Caution: Jumpers must resurface after entering water”.
3 out of 4 jumpers agree - it’s perfectly safe.
Police say there is nothing criminal about the death.
Just criminally stupid.
you can’t fix stupid
Sad for the girl and family.
Made the mistake of keeping my legs open on a 40’ jump into the water once.
Sang soprano for an hour.
I’ll bet they all yelled YOLO!!!!
Liberal Nanny State sign:
Cromulent?
Must have dug that one out of the cromlechs!
Where did you get this picture of me?
Cromulent A humorous, intentionally morphologically opaque neologism coined by American television writer David X. Cohen (born 1966) for Lisa the Iconoclast, a 1996 episode of the animated sitcom The Simpsons.
You obviously didnt get the malaprop satire

While breezing along on the Interstate while the outside temp is 95, your in vehicle AC pumping for all it is worth, traffice ‘choked’ and that pleasant little sign
BRIDGES FREEZE BEFORE ROADWAY
Pops up and immediately gives you something to ‘talk’ about - even if you are alone.
Kind of like the old ‘Baby On Board’ sign..
I was fixin’ to ram that car in front of me but seeing as it has a baby on board sign, I will wait and pick someone else.
Then again, if one is on their PHONE or chomping down on a ‘sit down meal’ and acting like they are on their couch, all the traffic or signs in the world won’t matter.
If this were the USA, the city would be sued for putting a dangerous nuisance in the way of the innocent group of people.
We've been watching you for YEARS!
