I see that expression getting tossed around a lot and I am beginning to wonder how literally accurate this is. Sorry to sound a bit crazy, but I’m curious as to EXACTLY what people mean when they say this. What exactly transpires?

Judging from the two books, Thanks for the Memories ... and Weird Scenes in the Canyon, it's not literal (and I'm not even sure how that transaction would happen). The typical mechanism is that the new "devotee" becomes a member of the club through sex with minors, often facilitated by drugs and well documented by the club. The club now has a stick to prevent the devotee from straying, the young carrots continue to be freely shared, and an additional carrot appears -- newly opened opportunities for career success.
Result: soul traded for illicit sex and other worldly benefits.
