It’s been decades since I read 1984. I didn’t remember that part. Maybe I should put it on my “read again” list. ( I need to live to be 1000 to make a dent in my reading lists! )

I may have confused the details - I am recalling (I think) the black and white movie and the contorted faces of the people chanting HATE! We highschool students didn’t understand why normal people would walk into a room, hate at a picture of a man, and then go back to “normal.” Also - we struggled with the teacher’s suggestion that they knew nothing about this man, that they just knew what they were told - he was hateful.
Don’t misunderstand. I’m not challenging or doubting your recollection. I think it’s accurate. I just didn’t remember it myself. I only remember the general gist of the story. I remember Big Brother surveillance (check), newspeak (check), the constantly shifting wars/allegiances (check), the rewriting of history (check).
I regarded 1984 as a warning. I just didn’t realize that the DS would use 1984 as a blueprint.
