Interesting. The Europeans brought dogs with them, and obviously the native dog population, for one reason or another, was already on the downhill slide. I’m not sure what the domesticated dog population in the northern Americas was like pre European, but I’d imagine it was heavily wolf.

In the south, chihuahuas are actually a very ancient breed, but the originals don’t look like those trembling little “handbag dogs.” The original Chihuahuas had sort of long hair and floppy ears and were about the size of a small spaniel.
