* The British Royal Navy has been detaining U.S. flagged ships near Cuba as part of the campaign against the slave trade. This has caused tension between the two nations.

Minnesota was admitted as a state and Congressional representatives admitted to House and Senate. The application of Oregon to become a state passed the Senate but not the House. “Opposition was made to it on the ground that the Constitution of the State prohibits the introduction of free negroes and Chinese.”

The Seminole Indians of Florida have been transferred to the Indian Territory.

There is also news from Great Britain, France and The East.

Thanks for posting this. My parents have original bicentennial copies of Harper’s Weekly, hidden somewhere. I use to look them over when I was kid in late 60s, early 70s. They were going to sell in late 80s or early 90s but not worth much. Not sure what other dates they may have other then 1876 or what shape the papers are in now.
