The problem is that the puzzle pieces that don’t yet fit can overwhelm. Successful puzzle solvers frequently organize their unused pieces by various criteria that let them know when the time is right to examine them more closely. Pure random pieces laying out in equal importance more often just confuse the issues.

Excellent stratagem, mairdie..... but I do notice you are saying to keep all possible pieces! If you throw them out with last week’s pieces and the dried up piece of ham, you’ll have blanks in the puzzle.
